A world-class science fair calls for world-class prizes. They include once-in-a-lifetime experiences like a scientific trip to the Galapagos Islands with National Geographic Explorer, unique scholarships and real-life work opportunities in iconic science centers of excellence like CERN in Switzerland.

New Science in Action prize

There’s also a special Science in Action prize, sponsored by Scientific American.
This is a special judges’ award for projects that champion scientific projects that make a practical difference in the lives of a group or community.

Judges

The Google Science Fair judging panel is an international team of scientific experts from a wide range of fields – from biology, physics and chemistry to computer science.

Everyone has a question. What’s yours?

It could be a new take on particle physics, or game theory. It could be a cost-effective way to provide clean water to a remote community, or maybe a project like reducing the carcinogenic properties of grilled chicken (that was one of last year’s winning entries). It should definitely be inspired.
You might already have the beginnings of an idea. Or just be hungry to get involved. Either way, you have until 1 April 2012 to work on identifying your question and building your project.

Windows & Firefox shortcuts

Here are some XP and Firefox tricks that will let you forget about your mouse and start using keyboard shortcuts

Windows XP

1. [SHIFT] + [alt] + [PrntScrn] – high contrast
A window will open, click OK or simply hit [Enter]. This will enlarge the font on all open Windows and change colors to high contrast. For example the desktop will turn black, what was black text on white background will be reversed. Clicking the same key combination again reverts the changes.

2. [Ctrl] + [alt] + [up/down/left/right arrow] – rotate screen
This won’t work on every machine as it depends on your graphics card and video drivers. However, if it does work, it will rotate your desktop.

3. [Ctrl] + select items from taskbar, right-click selected – mass control open windows
cool keyboard tricks

You need to hold the [Ctrl] key while selecting open windows from the taskbar. To open the menu seen on the left, right-click any of the selected items.
With this trick you can simultaneously close a group of applications at once or show them side by side or stacked or in a cascade.
This can save a ton of time wasted on rearranging windows.

4. [Alt] + [Tab] – switch between running programs
A little window will launch showing all open programs. Click the [Tab] key to jump to the next application, release keys to open the selected one.

5. [SHIFT] + [Del] – bypass Recycle Bin
Selecting a file and pressing the combination above will invoke a delete confirmation dialog. Clicking ‘Yes’ will delete the file without sending it to the Recycle Bin.

6. [Windows] + [D] – show desktop or restore open windows
This is the keyboard shortcut to the respective quick launch taskbar icon.

7. [Windows] + [L] – lock system
An easy way to quickly protect and lock your system. When you log back in, all programs will still be running and windows will appear just the way you left them.

8. [Ctrl] + [Z] and [Ctrl] + [Y] – undo and redo
I’m sure you all know that you can undo changes using the [Ctrl] + [Z] shortcut. Wouldn’t it be awesome to have this feature outside the computer? Anyways, you can undo an undo, i.e. redo what you did using the [Ctrl] + [Y] key combination.

9. [Windows] + [R], type cmd, hold [Ctrl] + [SHIFT] and hit Enter – run command prompt as Administrator
The command prompt will now be run as Administrator.

10. Create your own keyboard trick!
cool keyboard tricksAre there folders or applications you need a lot? Why not create your own keyboard shortcut to quickly access these tools?
This will only work for shortcuts located on your desktop!
First you need to create an actual desktop shortcut. Right-click on the application and select > Create Shortcut from the context menu. Make sure the shortcut sits on your desktop. Now right-click the shortcut and select > Properties. You should see a line that says “Shortcut Key: <none>”. Click that line and then click a letter ony our keyboard, for example P. A shortcut will be created, in this example [Ctrl] + [alt] + [P]. And there you go, now you have your own personal shortcut key.

Increase Your Typing Speed and Accuracy

Why Typing Speed is necessary?
The most important requirement of a medical transcriptionist is good keyboarding speed and accuracy. The most effective method for keyboarding is called as “touch” typing. With touch typing, hands will be placed on the keyboard with fingers in particular formation. The position of every key on keyboard is typed and memorized which occurs fluidly without a necessity to look at keyboard continuously.

Standardizing keyboards:
Typing keyboards used by medical transcriptionists should be standardized in order to organize the keys for getting maximum efficiency. Since there are schools of thought which insist that there are many way to organize a keyboard. The schools of thought of have not existed and the present keyboard arrangement which is seen in many keyboards is one variation and another has become a common standard at present. The QWERTY keyboards are used most commonly in American and Asian countries.

Standardization took place for a major reason. We should think about wide amount of information which is present in libraries, books and internet. All the information should be typed by medical transcriptionists with excellent keyboard skills and accuracy. Standard computer keyboards have provided a mechanization of the process of typing which has resulted in incredible increase in keyboarding speed and accuracy.

Touch Typing Method:
The old method used for keyboarding which is used widely is the “hunt and peck” method of keyboarding. It is a very tedious and ineffective typing method. People using this typing style are either not capable or not willing to spend time for memorizing the keys position on keyboarding for adopting the standard the finger position techniques. Unless we are a person who interacts with the keyboard rarely, we will definitely benefit from efficiency which is generated through memorization of keyboard and touch typing methods.

Checklist for Speed Typing
In addition to learning touch typing; most of the people are able to increase the keyboarding speed and efficiency through a mix of:

 1. Maintaining the right typing speed which means sitting erect with the elbows to our sides and the finger should neither press down nor hover, but it should rest gently on the right keys in the standard position.
 2. Ensuring that keyboard is placed at proper height. Many keyboard and desks will set in standard height. We must be aware that if we are taller or shorter than the average, we would require adjusting our chair for establishing proper positioning.
 3. Typing with the finesse which means typing fluidly when fingers rest on keyboard gently.
 4. Refrain ourselves from overworking. We should take periodic rests from our typing routine and relax our fingers for some time. Gluing ourselves to a keyboard for a long time of uninterrupted keyboarding shall lead us to problems related to fatigue and reduce our productivity in long run.
 5. Monitoring our typing speed and the accuracy through frequent returning to the free typing tests which are available online could motivate us for higher speed levels and accuracy as we find the results.
Typing speed and accuracy is the most important which we do not care about at early point of time. But when seeing other typing on keyboard fast, we might feel that “I wish I were that kind of person”. The average speed of typing for a normal person will range from 30 to 35 words per minute which is quite acceptable. But when we want to become a medical transcriptionist, we would require a minimum typing speed of at least 60 words per minute and 100 percent accuracy for which we would need to improve our keyboarding skills.
The commonly used keyboard layout is the QWERTY keyboard layout and we should first start practicing to type without looking at the keys present in the keyboard. It will be quite hard at beginning but we could catch up after some time. We should maintain the posture properly when typing and we should have a good arm rest so that both our hands are parallel to ground when we type in keyboard. The fingers must be raised slightly when we type. We can use ergonomic keyboard which is good for our hands. They keys will be arranged to help us type faster and we can avoid the carpal tunnel syndrome. We can take online typing tests and check our improvement. Though we make mistakes initially, we can increase the keyboarding speed and accuracy by practicing continuously.

How to play Audio/Video Files in Linux

A large number of Linux Distributions these days including Fedora,Ubuntu,Kubuntu etc which have become quiet popular and are increasingly being accepted by the Desktop Users lack proper support for playing the popular Audio/Video Formats right out of the box mainly because of certain patent and royalty issue . The issue of no cross platform file compatibility has been robbing common users of ability to display files and this has been one of the major reason for slow adaption of Linux on the Desktop Front. The case isn't that the Linux dosent support these formats but is not intentionally added to the Linux distribution because of legal reasons. However with a bit of tweaking/installing applications it is possible to run these files in the Linux Operating system . Here in this article we look at playing various Audio/Video format on the Linux Operating System. The system on which these have been tried is a Fedora Core 6 based distribution however all these should be equally applicable to other Linux distributions.

Real Player

Playing Real Media(.rm) Files :-

Real Player has been available on the Unix/Linux platform since a number of years . The Current version of the realplayer available on linux is the RealPlayer 10 though not as feature rich or rich in user interface as one available on the windows platform but still very usable and does the job of playing audio/video files quiet well and can be obtained at the following address . http://www.real.com/linux?pcode=rn&am

Besides having ability to play the RealMedia(Audio and Video) (.rm,.ra,.rv,.rmvb) File , it can be used for playing mp3 files , (.3gpp) files popularly used in cellphone cameras , and the open source Audio format Ogg Vorbis(.ogg).

The Linux Version of Popular Real Player

Playing mp3 files : -

Mp3 is one of the most widely used audio format around the world right now so it would be silly if Linux could not play mp3 .

A number of players exist for playing mp3 files :-

mpg123

This is command line based audio player that forms the backbone of number of graphically available Audio players , it is one of the most efficient player on the Linux platform and can play mp3 files on as low hardware specs as a 120Mhz Pentium Processor based computer . A similar command line application is mpg321 that can be used for playing mp3 files.

mpg123 or mpg321 file name - To play mp3 file

Ctrl + C - This skips to next track

Typing Ctrl + C Twice - quits the application

mpg123 -z *.mp3 : - Command would play all the mp3 files in the directory with a shuffled play-list.

mpg123 -w filename.wav filename.mp3 :- This command would convert the mp3 file to wav file , whic can then be used for burning on to cd to make audio cd.

However if your audio files/file is located in some location in sub-folders and u don't know exact location then following command can be used

mpg123 $ (find -name "Filename")

Steps to use Rupee symbol in Documents & Webpages

The new Indian rupee sign has been adopted so quickly, that in 6 months (the competition was announced in March 2009 and the final decision was given in July 2010), it is now seen on all magazines, dairy products, farm produce, newspapers — pretty much anything you could pick up at a supermarket! And blogs and online publications have been just as quick to adopt them.

Big question is that how to write the rupee symbol.

So here is a solution to it!
NOTE:you cant write the rupee symbol on your webpage as you write on your documents. You have to follow different procedure for written documents and your webpages.

Inserting the Rupee sign in documents

Internet startup Foradian were quick to release a font with the Rupee symbol as a character. You can freely download the font and use it in your text documents.

1. Follow this link to download the Rupee font. Download
2. After download click on downloaded file install this font# Now go to your document and select the font 'Rupee Foradian' from your font list
# Now press the '~' given on the keyboard. Note that there is no need to press shift, ctrl or alt.
documents.

Using the sign in webpages and blogs

Initially people resorted to the raw image hack method — creating a small transparent image of the symbol and simply inserting them into the post using HTML. Here’s a new method to include rupee symbol in your blogs & webpages .
1

<img style="border:none;vertical-align:middle" width="14" height="14" src="/rupee.png" alt="Rs."/>
Now there are a few pitfalls in this method that make it a ‘hack’.
 • You need to create the image, and it needs to be the colour of your website’s text.
 • You might also want to create multiple images, in multiple sizes/styles, depending on which part of the page it will appear.
 • You need to hand-code HTML for inserting it.
 • The image might not be visible in your readers’ RSS clients.
 • It might now show up properly in IE 6!
 • Copying and pasting it in Notepad or similar text-only editor would not work.

The right way to insert the Rs. sign

You could use a Web -based API like WebRupee, which is a simple and effective method to insert the sign in webpages and blogs, while conforming to W3C standards as well as being cross-browser compatible. Their homepage gives clear and concise instructions on how to use their free service. All it takes is adding a reference to their stylesheet or JavaScript to your header file, and then using the following line of code to display it on your website.
1
<span class="WebRupee">Rs.</span>

Features of Windows 8 : Preview

Windows, being one of the most used OS, brings great challenges for Microsoft to keep its users impressed in the next version of Windows.
Although Windows 7 has done exceptionally well since its release, Microsoft has been constantly working to make the next version of Windows a better one by further improving upon the existing features, and have added new impressive Windows 8 features along with a stunning UI.
Microsoft released the early version of Windows 8 on a prototype tablet last week. Those of you who would like to taste and experience the all new Windows 8, you can download the Developer Preview, which is currently in pre-beta version. The developer version shows off the current stage of the OS. It is available for free download, and comes in three different packages:
 • (1) 64-bit version – Only the OS
 • (2) 32-bit version – Only the OS
 • (3) 64-bit version with developer tools

Windows 8 Features

Windows 8 offers a number of new Windows 8 features from its all new UI to Windows App Store and improvised security features. Here’s a list of new features and improvements which will arrive with Windows 8:

Support for both x86 PCs and ARM tablets

Windows 8 is the first edition of Windows which will work on both ARM based tablets and traditional x86 (as well as x32 and x64) PCs based on ARM processors from Intel and AMD.
“Support for ARM-based chipsets, touch, and sensors makes Windows 8 work beautifully on your choice of a full spectrum of devices, such as 10-inch slates with all-day battery life, ultra-lightweight laptops, and powerful all-in-ones with 27-inch high-definition screens,” Microsoft contends, in a Windows 8 Guide distributed with Windows Developer Preview

Windows To Go
The “Windows To Go” seems to be an exciting feature that basically allows Windows 8 to boot from a USB device (called as Live USB), including user’s programs, settings and files. The feature is designed to work with both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0, and on both legacy NIOS and UDFI firmware. However, Microsoft says that a user will not be able to “Hibernate” with this feature.
Another interesting thing about this feature is that, if the USB drive is removed, Windows will automatically freeze, but will continue to operate if the USB drive is inserted back in the next 60 seconds after removal.

Windows 8
“Windows To Go is a new feature in Windows 8 that enables enterprise administrators to create USB drives containing complete, managed Windows images that users can use to boot and run Windows on any Windows 7 or Windows 8 capable computer. Windows To Go makes it possible for employees to use a managed device whether they work from home, a client office or in a free seating environment. This session will discuss Windows To Go, its hardware requirements and building compatible and complementary software.”

Watch the Hajj in Saudi Arabia—the world’s largest pilgrimage

Nearly 2.5 million Muslims will officially begin the annual Islamic ritual of the Hajj on November 5, in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The Hajj represents one of the five pillars of Islam; it requires all Muslims around the world who are able-bodied and can afford it to perform the pilgrimage once in their lifetime.

The Hajj is an ancient ritual, but now, through the Saudi Ministry of Culture and Information's YouTube channel, millions of people from around the world will be able to experience and comment on the event by tuning in via video.

Earlier this year, we worked with the Saudi Ministry of Culture and Information to broadcast Islamic prayers live during Ramadan from the Holy Mosque in Mecca for the first time. In continued cooperation with the Ministry, we’re now able to live stream the Hajj on YouTube for the first time.

MICROSOFT TOUCH MOUSE

Microsoft Hardware has designed a new computer mouse called Microsoft Touch Mouse which adds touch features on top of the usual mouse functionality.
The mouse looks like any other mouse albeit with a weird form factor on first glance. It offers no mouse buttons in the traditional sense of the word, only a touch interface that makes up the upper half of the mouse body.
The touch interface reacts to touches. It is possible for instance to left-click and right-click by taping the finger in the right locations on the mouse surface. Microsoft states that it can do everything that a normal mouse can do which would indicate that there should be an emulation of a middle-mouse button as well. That’s however not confirmed and not shown in any of the videos.
It uses BlueTrack Technology to work on virtually any surface without difficulties. The USB Nano transceiver can pick up signals at a 30-foot range.
here is the video showing how it works
